At
the Request of Martin
Simpson Ernie Leblanc: At age 3, I listened to everything for hours. The sound I remember
the most is the bass (which could be increased with the turn of a knob), especially from the LP and title track 'A Taste of
Honey' by Hurb Alpert. The wildness of the other instruments, and those hypnotic horns, really grabbed this toddler's ears.
But, I knew intuitively that the bass made it all work. Eleven years later, I got my first bass. I actually
wanted to play electric guitar, but my first band said, "BASS!" Things got on and in a very short time my reputation grew.
Many players to this day pay me complements such as 'your the reason I play bass.' I was never satisfied with any of the bass
books on the market - all inadequate! I turned to trombone music by chance and found that these players spoke my language. When I was seventeen, My jazz piano teacher
heard me play bass one night and remarked, 'You remind me of Jaco.' Jaco? What's that?, I asked. After fourteen years of playing,
I quit. Fourteen years later, I missed my bass. It's good to be back. These days I've stayed with only two of the instruments
I taught myself to play. I compose songs primarily on a six-string acoustic guitar but keep the compositions simple so that
my bass can have a big back yard to play in. From Cliff Engel’s
"The International Institute Of Bassists" "It's
a pleasure to see that The International Institute of Bassists is now, as it has always been, the epitome of excellence in
cyberspace for all bassists. You have provided the entire world with a place where beginners and professionals alike can actually
learn the seemingly endless topics surrounding the art and science of bass. I have been searching the web for other bass sites
but have not found any that come even remotely close to this one. This site is still the only one to satisfy all of my needs
as a bassist. There's something for every bassist of all levels. You're making life in cyberspace great for your members and
challenging for your competitors. Your efforts are appreciated by those of us who need these enriching materials for our continuous
growth as practitioners of the art and science of bass playing. I am one of many who are very grateful to you for starting
and maintaining The IIB." - Ernie Leblanc, ( |
